Telavi

Telavi or Sighnaghi — where to base yourself in Kakheti

Both are two hours from Tbilisi and an hour from each other. Which one you sleep in depends on whether you came for the wine or for the view.

We run a four-room guest house in Telavi, so we are not neutral on this.

The two towns are sixty kilometres and about an hour apart, both roughly two hours from Tbilisi, and they are not remotely the same kind of place.

The short answer

Come to Telavi for the wine. Go to Sighnaghi for the view.

If you have three nights, do two here and one there, or the other way round. Everybody who does that comes back saying it was the right call.

What Sighnaghi is

A very small town on a ridge, wrapped in four kilometres of eighteenth-century wall with twenty-three towers. Each one is named after a village whose people were meant to shelter behind it. Erekle II had it built in the 1770s against Dagestani raiding parties. You can walk a long stretch of the wall, and from it the whole Alazani valley drops away in front of you, with the Greater Caucasus standing up on the far side. It is the best view in Kakheti and it is not close.

The town itself is a few hundred metres of restored pastel houses, carved balconies, a good concentration of restaurants and wine bars, and a marriage registry that famously opens around the clock, which is where the “city of love” business comes from. Bodbe Monastery, where St Nino is buried, is two and a half kilometres away.

It is genuinely lovely, it photographs better than anywhere else in the region, and it is the most visited place in Kakheti. That is the whole of the case against it.

What Telavi is

A working town of about seventeen thousand people, in the middle of the valley rather than looking down at it. There is a market, a bus station, a hospital, a university and a football club. Nobody restored it for visitors. It is simply the town Kakheti runs from, and has been since the seventeenth century.

What you come for is Batonis Tsikhe — the walled royal residence, palace, bath house and two churches inside one enclosure, one of the only well-preserved royal palaces left in Georgia — and the plane tree, which is around nine hundred years old, forty metres tall and eleven metres around the trunk. Both are a short walk from the house.

Half a day covers the town. That is not a criticism; it is the point. You are not here to look at Telavi. You are here to be twenty minutes from everything.

The argument that actually decides it

Look at where the cellars are.

From Telavi: Shumi 9 km. Ikalto 8 km. Tsinandali 12 km. Alaverdi 20 km. Gremi 28 km. Kvareli and the Kindzmarauli vineyards a little beyond that. Schuchmann at Kisiskhevi and Twins at Napareuli in between, and Teliani Valley in the town itself.

Telavi sits in the middle of the Alazani valley and the serious Kakhetian cellars are strung along it. You can do three or four in a day without covering fifty kilometres, and you can change your mind at lunchtime.

Sighnaghi is on a hill at the southern end of the same valley. Add the sixty kilometres between the two towns to nearly every line above, twice, and put that driving at the start and the end of a day you intended to spend drinking.

There is wine around Sighnaghi. Pheasant’s Tears is in the town, and the Kiziki vineyards are real. But the cluster is up here.

The other thing distance does is take away the family cellars. They are the best wine experience in this region and are not on anybody’s route. They work because somebody who lives nearby phones somebody else. That is a fifteen-minute radius, not a fifty-kilometre one.

Where Sighnaghi wins

Being honest about this matters.

  • The view. Nothing in Telavi comes close. If you want the balcony-over-the-valley photograph, it is there, not here.
  • Walkable evenings. Sighnaghi’s restaurants are inside three streets and the walls are lit after dark. Telavi’s are more spread out and the town goes quiet earlier.
  • Two days total. If Kakheti is a short stop between Tbilisi and the Azerbaijani border, Sighnaghi is the more efficient version of it and Bodbe is on the way.
  • It is prettier. Straightforwardly. Telavi is a real town and looks like one.

Where Telavi wins

  • Cellar density, as above. This is the big one.
  • The monasteries. Alaverdi, Ikalto and the two Shuamtas are all inside half an hour. Gremi and Nekresi are a morning.
  • Transport. More minibuses, in more directions, from a bigger station. Sighnaghi is a cul-de-sac; Telavi is a junction.
  • Rtveli. The harvest happens everywhere, but the densest cluster of family vineyards is here.
  • Tusheti. If you are going up the Abano pass, the road starts at Pshaveli, half an hour from Telavi.
  • It costs less, room for room, because it is not the postcard.

If you only have two nights

Stay in Telavi and drive to Sighnaghi for an afternoon. It is an hour each way. You will see the walls, eat somewhere with the valley underneath you, and be back for dinner. The reverse — basing in Sighnaghi and commuting up here for cellars — costs you the same driving, but on the day you most want to be drinking.

If you have four or more

One night in Sighnaghi and the rest here, and put Sighnaghi at the end. It is a good place to stop moving.

And if you are still deciding

Decide by what you want out of the week: the wine and the cellars point to Telavi, the view and the walls point to Sighnaghi.
